BULLETIN No. 3 A TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR DOMINICA

A TROPICAL STORM WATCH REMAINS IN EFFECT FOR DOMINICA…AS HARVEY DRENCHES THE WINDWARD ISLANDS

At 5:00a.m. Harvey was located near latitude 13.1 North, longitude 59.1 West or about 200 miles southeast of Dominica.

A Tropical Storm Watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area, in this case within 24-36 hours.  

A Tropical Storm Warning remains is in effect for Martinique, St. Lucia, Barbados, St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Harvey is moving towards the west near 18 mph (30 km/h) and a continued westward motion with a slight increase in forward speed is expected over the next couple of days.  On the forecast track, Harvey should move through the Windward Islands and into the eastern Caribbean Sea later today.

Maximum sustained winds remain near 40 mph (65 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) mainly to the north of the center.

Expected rainfall amount for Dominica is between 2 to 4 inches (50 to 100mm) with higher amounts in elevated areas.

  • Mariners and other users of the sea should remain extremely cautious and do not venture far from port.
  • Persons in areas prone to flooding, landslides and falling rocks are advised to be extremely vigilant and to exercise caution as flash flooding and winds gusting to tropical storm force are possible during today and tonight.
  • Residents in vulnerable areas should plan ahead and take all precautionary measures. Be on the lookout for fast rising water. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CROSS FLOODED ROAD or WATER-WAYS.
  • Avoid or limit outdoor activity due to flying debris.

The Meteorological Service will continue to monitor the situation and provide further updates.
